The Phillipsburg Public Works Department is currently flushing fire hydrants. You may have colored water during this process. Flushing the hydrant cleans the water supply lines and allows for inspection of the system components. While the hydrants are flushed, city staff will be recording the pressure rating of each fire hydrant. The main isolation valves will be operated using a mechanical valve turner to verify and support functionality. Phillipsburg's water system has approximately 90 fire hydrants and 250 valves. Approximately 100% of the fire hydrants and 20% of these valves are visited annually. Fire hydrant pressure ratings are one component used by the insurance rating company to set building insurance ratings.
