[ARCHIVED] Pickleball & Basketball Facility Open in Phillipsburg Park

Come join in the fun at the Phillipsburg Park.  Two new courts, one featuring pickleball and the other basketball, have opened where the old swimming pool was located prior to the construction of the Aquatic Center.  These courts were constructed by the Phillipsburg Public Works Department.  Utilizing the former pool shades has also allowed for the addition of shaded picnic areas near the courts.  A Kansas Department of Health & Environment (KDHE) Waste Tire Grant paid for 50% of the cost of four new picnic tables and four new park benches to allow users of the facility and spectators to enjoy the area.  The former pool bathhouse restrooms have been restored and are also open for use.

While everyone knows what basketball is, many have not heard of pickleball.  Pickleball was invented in 1965 and is a fun sport that combines many elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong. Pickleball is a game for all ages.  The game can be played both indoors or outdoors on a badminton-sized court with a slightly modified tennis net. It’s played as doubles or singles with a paddle and a plastic ball with holes. The court is 44 feet by 20 feet with a 36 inch net.  For more information about pickleball go to the USAPA Pickleball website.
