With the onset of
freezing temperatures and snow; several customers have asked questions about
snow removal and the City snow removal policies. Emergency snow routes are indicated with blue
and white sheet signs. The City’s Snow
and Ice removal plan is listed on the City’s Website (www.cityofphillipsburg.com) for your convenience.
The City Public Works
Department is responsible for the snow and ice removal on all City streets. It is unavoidable that the snow plows will
push some snow onto driveway and sidewalks. Time does not allow for the crews to come
back to remove the snow from individual driveways and sidewalks. To minimize the amount of snow, please be
sure to shovel the snow from your driveway and sidewalks into your yard instead
of the street.
It is the responsibility
of individual property owners to clear the sidewalks of snow and ice to
maintain public safety.
The
City ordinance states the following:
13-501 SNOW AND ICE TO BE REMOVED. (a) It
shall be unlawful for the owner and/or the occupant of a lots abutting upon any
sidewalks to fail to cause to be removed from sidewalks all snow and ice within
12 hours from the time that the snow fall and ice storm ceases. If snow falls or ice accumulates upon the
sidewalks in the nighttime, removal of same must be made within 12 hours after
sunrise on the following day.
(b) It shall be unlawful for any person to place
snow removed from private property upon any public street, alley, or sidewalk. (Code 2013)
13-502 SAME:
EXCEPTION; ALTERNATE REMEDY. Where that
shall be ice or compacted snow on any such sidewalk of such a character as to
make it practically impossible to remove the same, the sprinkling of ashes,
sand or other noncorrosive chemicals on the accumulation of ice or snow in such
a manner to make such sidewalk reasonably safe for pedestrian travel shall be
deemed a sufficient compliance with the provision of the article the ice or snow
can be removed. (Code 2013)
The City is sharing this information with our customers
to increase awareness. We have a large
number of people utilizing our sidewalks and streets and wish to avoid any
accidents. We ask for the community’s
assistance in abiding by the ordinances and assisting in the safety of the
traveling public.
